Industry and operations meet production software & AI

Hazzard is built by two partners: a CEO steeped in preparedness markets and GTM, and a CTO who ships AI and data systems in production. Same Colorado corridor. Same bet on the 5-year mitigation plan clock.

Patrick Van Horne

Co-founder & CEO

Boulder, Colorado

Patrick leads industry, operations, and go-to-market at Hazzard. He brings two decades of preparedness and operational-readiness work—helping organizations make better decisions before incidents and funding windows close.

A former Marine Corps infantry officer with Iraq deployments, he later led Combat Hunter training at the School of Infantry and co-authored Left of Bang. He co-founded The CP Journal and Active Analysis Consulting, advising public- and private-sector teams on readiness under pressure.

At Hazzard he focuses on the customer and the market: jurisdictions on the 5-year plan clock, consulting firms building pipeline, and the GTM motion that turns OpenFEMA expirations into actionable outreach.

Selected experience

  • Co-author, Left of Bang (Marine Corps Combat Hunter program applied broadly)
  • U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer — Platoon / Company leadership; Iraq deployments

Christopher Knight

Co-founder & CTO

Denver, Colorado

Chris leads product and engineering at Hazzard—the data layer, compliance-review systems, and AI-in-production judgment that make plan lookup, Radar, and future PRT pipelines trustworthy.

He was a Forward Deployed Engineer at Palantir, shipping Foundry and AIP systems with enterprise customers. Before that he spent years as a Senior Software Engineering Manager at Guild, building and leading product engineering teams. Roughly fourteen years of hands-on software across startups and scaled platforms.

His work centers on production AI and large structured corpora—turning live federal datasets and long documents into tools operators can defend in audit and funding conversations.

Selected experience

  • Forward Deployed Engineer, Palantir Technologies — Foundry / AIP production systems
  • Senior Software Engineering Manager, Guild — product engineering leadership
  • ~18 years building and shipping full-stack product systems
  • Production AI & data platforms — LLMs grounded in audited source corpora
  • Public civic-tech builds (e.g. searchable guides over large legislative corpora)
  • Galvanize / WWU — software craft and product foundations
